The objective is to develop robust methods for detecting long term changes in vegetation cover based on monitoring intervals from three to five years. The change monitoring has a long term perspective, and is therefore not tailored to specific satellites or sensors. The changes of interest might be due to changes in agricultural practice, natural hazards, climate change or changes in the hydrological conditions. Preliminary results show the promise of an object based approach. The vegetation change analyses are based on existing land cover mapping which defines the primary segments. The spectral information from remote sensing data is linked to these areas together with relevant supplementary data to identify the most robust measures of change. The main challenges are related to the extreme fragmentation of some landscapes which requires high resolution images, shadow from trees and alignment of the growth season with remote sensing data.

Vegetation cover change detection using RS and GIS in Chaharbagh rangelands of Golestan province for a period of 30-years
Using accurate and low-cost methods to monitor quantitative changes in vegetation cover play an important role in the efficient and sustainable management when the area is too large. In this study, the changes of vegetation cover were investigated using satellite data of TM (Landsat_5) and oli (Landsat_8) sensors for a 30-year period (1988-2018) in Chaharbagh rangeland of Golestan province. T...
متن کاملInvestigating the applicability of conventional vegetation indices for vegetation change detection in different environmental conditions
Vegetation indices have been developed to characterize and extract the Earth's vegetation cover from space using satellite images. For detection of vegetation changes, usually temporal images are independently analyzed or vegetation index differencing is implemented. A review on previous studies reveal that, in spite of developing several vegetation indices, to extract vegetation cover or veget...
متن کاملTree cover in Central Africa: determinants and sensitivity under contrasted scenarios of global change
Tree cover is a key variable for ecosystem functioning, and is widely used to study tropical ecosystems. But its determinants and their relative importance are still a matter of debate, especially because most regional and global analyses have not considered the influence of agricultural practices. More information is urgently needed regarding how human practices influence vegetation structure....
متن کاملResting Impact on Vegetation Cover of Fescue-Forbs Rangeland in Mongolia
The rangeland in the Khangai mountain region in Mongolia has degraded for the last decades mainly because of overgrazing and climate change. Livestock production is important part of the economy and is based on natural rangeland. In this research we seek to elucidate the influence of five years (2004-2009) of protection from grazing on vegetation cover of different degradation levels of Fes...
متن کاملDetecting temporal change in watershed nutrient yields.
Meta-analyses reveal that nutrient yields tend to be higher for watersheds dominated by anthropogenic uses (e.g., urban, agriculture) and lower for watersheds dominated by natural vegetation. One implication of this pattern is that loss of natural vegetation will produce increases in watershed nutrient yields. Yet, the same meta-analyses also reveal that, absent land-cover change, watershed nut...
